Why umbrella companies are under fire in 2026 — and what it means for contractors
The umbrella company model has been under increasing scrutiny from HMRC throughout 2026, and the consequences for contractors who rely on them are becoming harder to ignore.
For years, umbrella companies offered a simple solution for contractors caught by IR35 reforms: rather than setting up a limited company, you could work through an umbrella, which handled payroll, tax, and compliance on your behalf. The trade-off was a fee and less control over your take-home pay. For many, it was worth the convenience.
But a wave of enforcement action this year has exposed serious problems in the sector. HMRC has identified widespread non-compliance, including disguised remuneration schemes, inflated expense claims, and in some cases outright fraud. The result is a tightening of the rules that affects every contractor working through an umbrella, whether their provider is compliant or not.
