Pubs Could Stay Open Later for Euros

The UK government is proposing to extend pub and bar licensing hours if England, Wales, or Scotland reach the semi-finals or final of next year's European Football Championships

This means that thirsty supporters could be cheering their teams on until 1 am if any of the UK nations make it to the latter stages of the tournament.

The Home Secretary, James Cleverly, believes that there's nothing quite like the prospect of winning an international tournament to bring a country together. And with England and Scotland already on their way to Germany, and Wales still in the running for qualification, he's keen to show his support for both the teams and the hospitality industry.

"That's why we're looking at helping pubs and bars stay open longer if we reach the semi-finals or final," Cleverly said. "This will ensure families, friends, and communities can come together to cheer their nation on."

The proposed extension of licensing hours would not only provide a welcome boost for the hospitality industry but also give pubs and bars the clarity they need to plan ahead. It's not just about football – pub licensing hours were previously extended for the men's Euro 2020 final and the King's Coronation bank holiday weekend earlier this year.

The public consultation is now open, and the government will take into account the views of the public, licensing authorities, and the hospitality industry before making a final decision.
